SHOPPERS and traders today formed a human chain around Botley’s West Way shopping centre to protest against controversial redevelopment plans.

Around 550 people turned out for the demonstration, which was organised by campaign group West Way Community Concern.

The protesters joined hands around the under-threat centre to oppose plans for a £100m redevelopment proposed by developer Doric Properties.

It plans to demolish the centre and the privately-owned Elms Parade of shops to make way for a supermarket, cinema, health centre and 600 students.

The protestors carried banners bearing the slogan: "Botley wants better, not bigger" and performed a Mexican Wave during the 30-minute demonstration.
