IN the run up to Christmas more and more volunteers are pitching in to help at Shotover Country Park in return for logs for open fires.

The Oxfordshire Woodfuel Programme has been running the Logs for Labour project at the park near Headington for over a year.

It gives people the chance to help manage the woods and take home free fuel in exchange.

Carl Whitehead is the volunteer co-ordinator for Oxford City Council, who owns the park.

The 50-year-old from Witney said: “It is going really well, it has become much more popular by word of mouth.

“It is winter now too, it is nice to have an open fire at Christmas.

“A lot of people are looking for alternative means of heating their homes and this way they commit their time for wood which is much less than what they would pay for gas and electricity. “ To help volunteer contact manager@oxonwoodfuel.org.uk
