Cotswold wallers form winning combination
A CHARLBURY woman was among the winners in the annual Cotswold Dry Stone Walling Competition.
Harriet Baldwin and her walling partner Janet Deller, from Ascott, in Warwickshire, won the beginners’ pairs category.
The contest, which aims to promote the traditional countryside skill, was held at the National Trust’s Sherborne Park estate, between Burford and Northleach, on Sunday, October 6.
Another Oxfordshire entrant, Scott Read, took third place in the amateur and part-time professional class.
The event attracted entries from as far away as Cumbria, with the professional class won by Gordon Simpson, from Yorkshire.
More than 20 metres of wall was repaired by the competitors during the day.
The event is organised by the Cotswolds Conservation Board, which also runs courses in walling, and other rural crafts, including hedgelaying, blacksmithing, coppicing making traditional lime mortar and Cotswold stone tile roofing.
