SANDFORD residents are invited to a meeting on Monday about tackling speeding in the village.

An action plan is to be drawn up by Sandford-on-Thames Parish Council over concerns.

This year alone police have detected 112 driving offences in the village in eight operations.

The main 30mph Henley Road and Sandford Road through the village is particularly hit by speeding traffic, councillors warn. Speeds over 40mph are common, they say.

Speeding has been identified as a major issue in the parish council’s village plan.

Parish council chairman Steve Paine said: “I would estimate that 50 per cent are going through at 40mph on the main road.

“I say to drivers I know, ‘do you know it is a 30mph limit?’ Because it is such a wide road, people tend to go faster.”

He also said he was concerned the footpaths on either side of the road were too narrow and in “extremely poor condition”.

The council has a “minimal amount” of its £30,000 budget for traffic calming measures.

Mr Paine said it would seek help from South Oxfordshire District Council and Oxfordshire County Council, the highways authority. He said: “We get comments from residents fairly frequently. We really need to tackle this.”

Tricia O’Leary, manager of Vale House care home on Sandford Road, said something needed to be done.

Some drivers hit “scary” speeds as she walked in from Iffley at 6.30am, she said.

She said: “They obviously think there’s no one around.”

And care home residents were “dicing with death” when they crossed to the Oxford Thames Four Pillars Hotel with relatives, she said.

She said: “We could certainly do with a crossing. Something needs to be done.”

The council will meet at 7pm at the Welch Room, Church Road, next to Saint Andrew’s Church.

Hazel Hutton, 85, lives at Oxford Park Homes estate on Grenoble Road.

She said: “It is absolutely horrific. When they come along Grenoble Road from Sainsbury’s they’re doing up to 70mph.

“Something needs to be done, a speed camera would be absolutely brilliant.”
