A GRAFFITI-painted nightclub in St Clement’s could soon ‘disguise’ itself as an Oxford college in an effort to satisfy planners.

The owner of Clems has agreed to compensate for breaching advertisement regulations last month, after graffiti was painted outside the club, by making it fit in with the local area.

The move could see him repaint the venue so that it looks like an historic Oxford University colleges. St Clement’s is classed as an Oxford City Council conservation area and Clems owner Luis Carrera did not apply for planning permission for the graffiti.

He had a meeting with a city council planning officer earlier this month where it was agreed that he would make initial changes to the graffiti, including painting five pillars outside the club a cream colour.

Today Mr Carrera will have another meeting with the council to discuss further alterations, which could include making the outside look just like a university college.

Mr Carrera said: “The council has said the graffiti does not represent the spirit of Oxford.

“I will compromise. They have asked me to paint the pillars outside a cream colour and I’m happy to work with them.

“In the future, it could look like a college. It will not be graffiti-style. I want to avoid confrontation and it will put things in harmony with the area.”

He added that he would employ an artist from Spain to paint the university college but would confirm details after the meeting.

Ward councillor Graham Jones, who has received more than 10 complaints from residents about the graffiti, said he welcomes Mr Carrera’s “positive attitude.”

He said: “We want to preserve the area. It’s a question of people making a fuss and demanding direct action.

“I’m really delighted that the council has responded and it looks like we might have a resolution.”

Clems originally had the club’s name painted in large letters, but the city council said these exceeded the maximum height of 0.75m and told them to change it.

The nightclub later changed the design to have cartoon characters and its website address painted, which is the current design.

A spokesman for Oxford City Council said: “Our planning enforcement officers have had meetings with the owner and these meetings are ongoing. “We are looking at the outside of Clems as an advertisement and not in keeping with the area as it is a conservation area. “We would like to see a more appropriate form of advertising that does not have a detrimental visual effect on the building and wider conservation area.”
