‘Why did council approve these new warehouses?’
RESIDENTS have hit out after plans for three warehouses near their homes were approved without details of which firms will move in.
Oxford City Council’s east area planning committee approved plans for the three industrial units at the former DHL site off Sandy Lane West last week.
But residents questioned the decision and raised concerns at the meeting about the fact that no tenants had been selected for the buildings.
It comes after Rego Property applied for planning permission to provide 3,509 sqm of business and industrial space on the site. Permission for eight single-storey units was granted in 2008, but they were never completed.
Spring Lane resident Tina Hill told the meeting: “We were not happy with the application from 2008 and we’re not happy about this.
“We’re not happy about the size of the units and we want to know if they have investigated fire risk.
“In 2008 you had a conservation plan, now you have decided you want to put up big silver buildings with blue stripes in an area which should be a conservation area. We also don’t know what the site is actually going to be used for, we can’t seem to find that out.”
Planning agent Phil Brown, speaking on behalf of Rego at the meeting, said the development would create jobs for the area and boost Oxford’s economy.
He said: “It’s our view the scheme won’t block light to neighbours’ properties, mainly because of the profile of the roof.
“I don’t believe the scheme doubles the size of the units from the last scheme.”
Spring Lane resident Alan Kimber said: “I honestly don’t see how they can say this will have a minimal effect on the environment.
“I don’t understand how they can say that when the building will be double the height, it’s absolutely crazy.”
Councillor David Rundle said: “I read that the impact is considered to be less than the approved scheme. If that’s the case, then it would be very difficult for us to use that as a reason for refusal.”
