COMMENT: Lover of crickets is not a yob or villain
12:00pm Friday 6th September 2013 in News
THERE is something about the sound of crickets that transports the listener to another place.
Shut your eyes and listen to their chirping and you could be in south-east Asia or south America.
For a while at least, you could also have been in East Oxford, after self-confessed cricket lover Daniel Emlyn-Jones released 1,000 of the creatures into his back garden.
He did so because he loves the sound of them, but his seemingly innocent actions brought the full force of the law down upon him.
Mr Emlyn-Jones had breached the Wildlife and Countryside Act and ended up with a formal police warning.
We accept that the law is there for a reason, but this seems rather harsh. Mr Emlyn-Jones is a respectable, honest and active member of his local community, not a yob or a villain.
A friendly warning and the loss of his night time chorus would have sufficed in this case.
