Combine harvester burns for six hours
10:00am Friday 30th August 2013 in News
A COMBINE harvester caught fire and set a field alight leading to a six-hour battle by firefighters.
This picture was sent in by Oxford Mail reader Carl Nicholls, who spotted the blaze on Denman’s Farm, at Tumbledown Hill, near Cumnor, on Wednesday.
Nobody was injured but the damage to the barley crop was said to be substantial.
Mr Nicholls, a dairy farmer at Farmoor, said: “My wife phoned the fire brigade after we saw it, and they told us no-one else had called. It was good we did. We’re glad no one was hurt.”
A spokesman for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We sent four appliances and initial investigations appear to show it was caused by a mechanical fault.”
The incident follows three other farm machinery fires in 10 days near Wallingford, Derrington and Wantage. No suspicious circumstances were reported.
