Students flats just miss 'ugliest' award
10:30am Friday 30th August 2013 in News
The Castle Mill student accommodation near Port Meadow in Oxford has narrowly avoided being labelled the ugliest new building in the UK.
The controversial development was runner-up to another block of student flats, in the London Borough of Islington, which was awarded the 2013 Carbuncle Cup.
Construction industry journal Building Design (BD) hands the Carbuncle Cup to the “most hideous monstrosity” built in the last year.
The judges said the final decision was tight but that the flats built by the Frankham Consultancy Group “would not have caused as much offence had they been built on another site”.
Castle Mill made the shortlist of six in the competition, which invited people to vote for their winner, after attracting hundreds of nominations.
