A RECORD number of apprentices were taken on in Burnley during the last academic year.
A total of 1,170 people started on apprenticeships during 2011/12, 280 more than any previous year.
The figures come as the Lancashire Telegraph prepares to launch its Action4jobs campaign to help get local people back into work and develop career opportunities across East Lancashire.
Burnley MP Gordon Birtwistle, who heads the All-Party Parliamentary group on apprenticeships and is also an apprenticeship ambassador, said it showed the town was moving in the right direction.
“It’s fantastic news,” he said. Burnley is a high-tech town now. We have the college and uni campus and we are getting a University Technical College.
“There are also high-tech companies such as Aircelle and Veka. A lot of these companies want a skilled workforce which at the moment they can’t get, but through apprenticeships we are developing that workforce for them.”
A report on the Burnley economy, being presented to councillors next week, also reveals that there have been no major redundancies in the borough so far in 2013.
