PATIENTS at Oxford’s Churchill Hospital were treated to the soothing sounds of Mozart, Bratton and Vivaldi.

Musicians from Oxford Music Festival gave a classical concert for patients, staff and visitors in the hospital cafe.

One of the youngest musicians, Lucy Dundas, played the bassoon and the piano.

National Youth Orchestra member Lucy, 14, has been awarded a place at the Royal College of Music in London.

Lynda Forster, a former teacher from Shipton-under-Wychwood, enjoyed the performance with her mother Gladys Bury, 88, of Witney, there for treatment on a trapped nerve in her back.

The appointment was cancelled and the pair found themselves in the cafe enjoying a concert they had no idea was planned.

Mrs Forster, 61, said: “I’ve never heard the bassoon played so well. If there was anywhere you needed cheering up, it was here.

“It helped to make what could be a stressful time that much easier to deal with.”

Ruth Charity, organiser of Artlink, the hospital project to combine arts with therapy, said “Events like this really help take people’s minds off why they are attending hospital.”

Also on bassoon was James Dundas, with Ruth Friedlander, 14, on cello.

Oxford musicians Stephen Meakins and Peter McMullin played piano.
