YOU couldn’t make it up – Wall Street tycoon Thomas Guerriero has extraordinarily been named as the new president of Oxford City Football Club.
The multi-millionaire has said he chose the Marston-based club over several ‘big name’ teams because of its great passion and the people at the club. And the Harvard-educated businessman has already laid out some ambitious plans for the Blue Square Bet North side.
While Mr Guerriero remains tight-lipped over the financial benefit to the team that was once managed by England's World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore and Harry Redknapp, he has heralded a new era for the players and followers setting out promotion as the target.
The news has been welcomed by fans of the club, which was founded 11 years before Oxford United in 1882, who have hailed him as a really “nice guy”.
Some feel it’s a little early to be looking at a place in the Football League but it’s agreed that the side is currently riding high. No doubt over the coming weeks and months we’ll learn plenty more about the Brooklyn-born magnate and his vision for the club.
