Witney Guides gather for day of thinking

WITNEY Guides and Brownies and their leaders gathered at the High Street Methodist Church to celebrate the movement’s annual Thinking Day.
The event originated in the 1920s as a day of celebration and thanksgiving for the worldwide Guiding movement and is traditionally held on a weekend nearest to February 22, which was the birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Scout movement, and his wife Olave, who was Chief Guide.
The girls took part in activities including a sing-song, a wordsearch, a quiz and made beads from paper to create bracelets. They also enjoyed a chocolate fountain with fruit and marshmallows.
A number of awards were presented, with Lizzie McLoone and Emily Hewson receiving their leadership qualifications, while Ally Warren collected the Oxfordshire Guide Award after holding a number of positions in the county and Mandy Collicutt was honoured for 40 years’ continual service to Guiding.
The movement is looking for new leaders in Witney, so more girls can enjoy Guiding, especially to run an extra Rainbow unit for girls aged five to seven.
There is a long waiting list to join the town’s Rainbow units at present.
