A CENTURY of cinema was celebrated at Oxford’s Phoenix Picturehouse over the weekend.

The Jericho venue welcomed chef Raymond Blanc to an exhibition about its history.

Mr Blanc, far right, who had sponsored the framing of the pictures and gives cinema-goers a discount in his nearby Brasserie Blanc restaurant in Walton Street, joined guests on Friday night.

General manager Stuart Jarvis, right, said: “We’ve had a fantastic weekend of birthday celebrations.

“We had an exhibition in the cafe, we also had a lot of preview films, like the new Ken Loach film The Spirit of ‘45 and Ryan Gosling’s new film Place Beyond the Pines.

“We had a record-breaking audience on Saturday for the Rocky Horror Picture Show.”

Originally called The North Oxford Kinema, the Phoenix opened in Walton Street on March 15, 1913.
