Auction makes new millionaire

An Oxford academic has made almost £1m from the auction of a small Chinese vase, above.

The vase was brought to Britain by the unnamed seller’s family more than a century ago and was estimated at only £10,000 to £15,000.

The blue and white bottle vase is an extremely rare 18th century ornament made for a Chinese emperor. An anonymous Chinese telephone bidder paid £950,000 at Tennants’ auction rooms in North Yorkshire.
