OXFORD Ice Rink staff and these penguins are hoping to p-p-pick up some cash for Red Nose Day.

The penguins, who usually help youngsters learn their balance on the ice, come to life in a YouTube video in their own take of a scene from the popular BBC programme Frozen Planet, narrated by David Attenborough.

The video, shot by staff member Peter Magnuson, was created to promote the rink’s disco ‘onesie’ night on Friday which has been organised to raise cash for Comic Relief.

Mr Magnuson, 36, from Banbury, said: “We wanted to make it funny. I think people respond to it better when it makes them laugh.

“Quite a lot of people have said they enjoyed watching the video. We might have to do another one.”

The video shows the group of penguins on the ice rink with Oxford Ice Rink mascot Marvin the penguin ‘stealing’ ice hockey pucks to the soundtrack of Frozen Planet.

Mr Magnuson added: “We are supporting Red Nose Day because it is something which we can do to help and involve the community.”

Ice rink manager John Harris said: “It is a great cause, it raises millions of pounds and it is just a fun thing to do. The video is sheer genius.I would love it to go viral. It’s had about 500 hits already.”

Visitors attending the rink’s disco night are encouraged to wear their ‘onesies’ or PJs.

Friday night’s event runs at the rink in Oxpens Road from 8-10.30pm and tickets are £7.20, with £1 from each sale going to Comic Relief.

  • In the run-up to Red Nose Day, Oxfordshire community groups are being encouraged to bid for up to £1,000 from a £50,000 cash pot off by Comic Relief. The deadline is Friday, and a panel ran by the Oxfordshire Community Fund – made up of representatives from the Oxford Mail and Comic Relief – will hand out the money. Click here for more details.
