Drama as police talk man down from top of multi-storey
9:30am Tuesday 5th March 2013 in News
HUNDREDS of onlookers stared helplessly as a man threatened to jump from the Westgate centre car park in Oxford yesterday.
Roads around the car park were cordoned off at about 10am while emergency service teams took control of the area.
Police negotiators successfully talked the man down after about two hours.
Banbury resident Lucas Bogacki was one caught up in the drama.
The 27-year-old said: “I was waiting for my wife and suddenly hundreds of people are staring up.
“My first thought was that someone had jumped and died and damaged a car or something, but the police seemed to have everything under control.
“A few people were panicking but for the most part many were calm.
“We were there for about two hours until they managed to move the cordon and clear the scene. It was good that it ended safely.”
Police were called at about 10am following concerns for the welfare of a man seen on the car park roof.
Once safely removed from the scene the man was taken into the care of welfare authorities.
