Shoppers buying into night vision

STRANGERS were invited to link arms as part of a piece of street theatre by Oxford’s Reclaim the Night to flag up their annual march later this week.

Each year, the organisation arranges for hundreds of women to walk through Oxford to take a stand over violence against women.

Shoppers in Cornmarket Street on Saturday were asked to think how they would demonstrate listening, trust, friendship, community, and empathy. Organiser Kirsty Braithwaite said: “It was really fun to get a bit of audience participation and chat a little about what Reclaim the Night is.”

Friday’s women-only march starts at 6pm at the junction of Cowley Road and Magdalen Road.

It will end with a mixed gender rally at the Town Hall in St Aldate’s from 7pm.

"mixed gender rally"
You couldn't make it up, could you?
Are tax pounds used towards this or is it spontaneous inanity by those who find Friday night TV rubbish? (Advice-go to the pub. It's much more fun)

You're confused by the strangest things LP. A mixed-gender rally does just what it says on the tin - both men and women are welcome.

It's a good job some of us 'find Friday night TV rubbish', or else our pubs, restaurants and cinemas would close down. The point the march is trying to make is that all of us should have the right to enjoy these facilities without being assaulted or raped on the way home. Quite why you find this 'inane' I'm not sure. Maybe you'd be happy being forcibly penetrated by a man who saw you in the street, but I'm very sure you'd be in the minority.
