Bookshop turns the spotlight on hospice

IT HAS been on display at a manor house, a church, a theatre and a hospice.

Now the We Are 30 exhibition, a series of photographic portraits of terminally ill children and young people cared for at Oxford’s Helen and Douglas House, has gone on display in a bookshop.

As part of its Medical Matters week, bookseller Blackwell’s invited the hospice to display the photographs in the Broad Street shop’s medical department.

Events co-ordinator Emily Sargeant – pictured left with Elizabeth Dawson, head of the medical books department at Blackwell’s – said: “We approached the hospice because this week is our medical week. We thought it would be really nice to do something with Helen and Douglas House so there was a more charitable element.

“It looks really good and it was lovely to be able to get them involved.”

Other events as part of the week included a sixth form information evening last night for young people who want to pursue medicine as a career, with speakers ranging from university admissions tutors, to radiologists and nursing lecturers.

Author Sheila Kitzinger, the maternity and childbirth expert, will be giving a talk today.

Her talk starts at 7pm and costs £3, while entry to the We Are 30 exhibition is free of charge.
