TRAIN fan Charles Swinfen was thrilled to see steam engines at a railway centre’s open day.

The seven-year-old was among visitors to Didcot Railway Centre’s running day on Saturday.

Families rode in coaches from the 1930s pulled by the centre’s Great Western steam locomotives.

Charles, from Market Harborough, Northamptonshire said: “I enjoyed looking at the engine and seeing how steam works.” Mum Ruth Swinfen added: “It was fantastic.

“We had never been before and we were really impressed with what was there.”

Steam engine owner Brian Thompson was also presented with the ‘Engine of the year Award’ by EverythingGWR, a Great Western Railway blog.

The next running day is on Wednesday from 10.30am until 3.30pm.
