COMMENT: Every road user has the duty to put safety first

TODAY’S report on the high number of cyclists who jump red lights and fail to use helmets and lights will come as no surprise to many motorists.
Drivers are well aware of the need to accommodate the city’s cyclists to help free Oxford from congestion.
But the often unpredictable behaviour of riders infuriates and frightens motorists in equal measure.
But the lack of injuries does not mean jumping a red light is risk-free – it is clearly foolish and dangerous to cycle into a stream of oncoming motor vehicles.
Cyclists must think more carefully about their own behaviour.
And motorists must respect all road and pavement users not only for their safety but for the future of good relations on the city’s transport network.
