Cultural night at the museum
7:00am Tuesday 29th January 2013 in News
MORE than 3,000 people packed into Oxford Ashmolean Museum for the museum’s first Live Friday cultural night.
On the last Friday of every month, the Beaumont Street museum is opening its doors from 7-10.30pm, giving visitors the opportunity to see the collections and major exhibitions after hours.
Friday’s event, entitled An Evening with the Gods focused on the world of classical Greek myths and legends.
Damian O’Connell, 32, from St Clement’s, Oxford, and his girlfriend Jenn Harrigan, 33, were among those who visited.
Mr O’Connell said: “It was really very enjoyable. It wasn’t what I was expecting because there were so many people there and you tend not to see a museum that busy.
“My girlfriend and I had a lot of fun, particularly trying on the helmet and trying to learn a bit of Greek.
“We watch the Spartans on TV too so it was really good to see helmets and try them on.”
Toga-tying was also in the agenda with Oxford University Classics Society experts demonstrating how to tie a toga properly.
The February event will be Musical Technologies: Old and New, exploring the relationship of music and technology over the last century.
