A FAMOUS TV doctor has handed out prizes to some of Oxford’s top schoolchildren.

Fertility expert Professor Lord Robert Winston was the guest of honour at Oxford Spires Academy’s Year 11 and 13 prizegiving ceremony which took place at the Glanville Road school on Tuesday.

The professor was invited to hand out the awards and trophies after meeting Spires principal Sue Croft at a national awards ceremony.

Mrs Croft said: “It was delightful. I have spoken to a number of students this morning and they thoroughly enjoyed it.

“He spoke about his experiences and said he didn’t think he sounded at all like my description of him because he said he wasn’t particularly good at school. It was later on he began to flourish.”

Among those receiving awards was Salma Haque, 17, from Cowley, who received a trophy for the best performance overall at GCSE and also certificates for English, physics and geography.

She said: “I found it really insightful.

“He was really interesting to talk to and I liked the fact he gave me some advice on what to do within the next couple of years of my life.

“I have always been inspired to work hard but little things like meeting him make me want to do even better.”
