Call to give independent shops space at West Way
9:40am Thursday 10th January 2013 in News
Janet Godden
PLANS to demolish Botley’s West Way shopping centre and build a cinema and shopping complex should include space for independent traders, it was called for last night.
Doric Properties has announced plans to knock down the centre to pave the way for a new multi-screen cinema and shops.
But concerns have been raised by county councillor for North Hinksey and Wytham Janet Godden.
She said: “I certainly welcome investment in West Way, which has for so long been neglected, but many residents want to keep the small independent shops which they value very much, but all we hear about is a large supermarket.”
She called for a speedy turnaround on any planning bid, saying residents would not want to wait long.
And she also said the developer should work with the owners of the nearby Seacourt retail park.
She added: “Investment is welcome but it’s come out of the blue and there are questions to be answered.”
Doric spokesman Julian Seymour said it was too early in the planning stages to release any more information.

Let's hope they retain the Co-op too.
I can't see the Co-op surviving next to a supermarket.
Oxfordshire's largest shopping centre has the Co-op as an anchor tenant, yet the family owned independent such as B&M, Wilkinsons & 99p stores along with major chains such as Iceland, Superdrug & Boots all undercut them considerably.

I bet you won't be able to park outside the door to load your sacks of pet food in the new development.

The Co-op should remain the main supermarket at the West Way shopping centre, imho. There's no need for a mega Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury's etc or indeed anything else designed to suck in traffic from miles away.
Independent, local and distinctive is preferable. If you need to shop at large chains and multiples it is a short walk or bus ride down the Botley Road or into town, or indeed a short drive to Sainsbury's.
