EMERGENCY services are preparing as thousands of people are expected out in Oxford tonight.

Supt Chris Sharp, Oxford city police area commander, said: “We expect a busy night with Oxford attracting many people, including those from surrounding towns and villages.

“Police are very well accustomed to dealing with the busy night-time economy, New Year’s Eve being no exception, and are there to help everyone’s enjoyment, being visible to those who need our support whie dealing with any incidents of disorder robustly or with any minority that may spoil it for others.”

South Central Ambulance Service spokesman Gill Hodgetts urged people to drink responsibly and only call an ambulance if necessary. She said: “We are working at maximum capacity at the moment. Every resource we send out is precious.”

The Oxford Bus Company will be operating a Saturday timetable today but will finish earlier – most final services will depart at about 8pm.

Stagecoach will also be running a Saturday service on most routes.
