Biker killed in crash with van

Police are appealing for witnesses after a motorcyclist was killed in an accident on the A4074.

The crash - between the Golden Balls roundabout and the Berinsfield roundabout - occurred shortly before 9.45am.

An ambulance and helicopter carrying a doctor were scrambled, but the motorcyclist, a 40-year-old man who has not yet been formally identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed in both directions and traffic diverted until 1.30pm while police carried out investigations.

The coroner and the man's family have been informed of his death.

Both the motorcyclist and the driver of the Ford Transit van had been travelling southbound along the road, which links Oxford and Reading, when the collision occurred.

Accident investigator Sgt Sarah Flavin said: "We are aware there were several motorists who may have seen the collision and not stopped and spoken to police.

"I would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the collision, or the motorcyclist or van before- hand."

The man's red motorcycle was removed from the scene by a recovery truck team shortly before 1pm.

Speaking at the scene, Pc Jude Miranda, of Abingdon Police Station, said: "The motorbike was in bits, the lights and the number plates were found about 15 or 20 feet away.

"The body was found in the layby along with the motorbike."

Phil Warwick, 41, a supervisor from Oxfordshire Highways, who was at the scene diverting traffic, said the driver of the van was a colleague.

He said: "He was pretty shaken up. He said he just came off the Golden Balls roundabout heading south and was trying to turn right when it happened."

The collision happened just yards from a sign reminding motorists about the number of accidents which have happened on the notorious stretch of road.

In April, 22-year-old motorcyclist Mark d'Ardenne died in a head-on collision further south on the A4074, on the Dorchester bypass.

Anyone who witnessed yesterday's collision and is yet to speak to Thames Valley Police should call Sgt Flavin on 08458 505505.

The bikers fault?? what happend to checking your mirrors before turning? You are allowed to over take on that stretch of road. AND NO, we are not colour blind to indicators. Are you drivers blind when you pull out of junctions infront of us? Because you've not looked properly? Because I've had that happen to me several times and i've kept to the speed limit. JUST because we choose to ride on two wheels doesn't mean we are to blame for every single accident that happens when a motorcyclist is unfortunately killed due to drivers neglect to not look properly and check their mirrors.
My regards to the family of the man involved.

As someone who drives Oxfordshires roads everyday of his working week I should like to make an observation. Was the van indicating and did the bike miss it? Did the van driver check his mirror before he signaled? These are not questions for speculation here, they are for the coroners court to decide. They will have all the evidence so lets leave it to them and let our thoughts be with the families of those involved.
As for Foxes dinner, I am not a biker but recognise the unique nature of the place....would people prefer it to be replaced with a mcdonalds or burger king?

Very sad, I even said RIP when I drove past the spot on the way home last night.

It's a fast road but not a dangerous one, if you're prepared to sit behind slower traffic. I never overtake down there.

To correct both of you. Another biker - the turning to Burcot to which you refer is a No Entry. Ali - yes you can turn right into the slip road leading up to Notcutts.

Yesterday (6/8/8), in around Didcot AND Burcot TWO motorists pulled out in front of me on my motorcycle. I was not speeding, I had my lights on and I was positioned correctly in the road. I also drive cars. There are few times when I go out on my bike that I do not have to take aavoiding action because some car/van/lorry driver has not seen me because they are looking for something larger than a motorcycle and drivers only glance in their rear view mirrors so often do not see motorcycles which are not very wide. I doubt there is any car driver writing on this message board that has not been responsible for making a motorcyclist take avoiding action at some point. So before all you finger pointers start blaming motorcyclists take a look in the mirror.

I just wanted to exprese my heart-felt condolences to the family and friends of this man. I am a friend of Mark who was killed earlier this year on the A4074 so I know how sad it is. Just so you know you are not alone and many people are thinking of you.

Firstly, another sad loss, but an avoidable one.
Motorcyclists (I am one) , your bike will easily out perform your abilities and reactions and in some cases the road surface, drive within your limits AND the law!.

if the van driver had just come off of the golden balls roundabout and was heading south , there is no right turning untill you get to the berinsfield roundabout , how did a crash occur on a straight road ?

That was a reply to what someone had written before saying that it must have been the bikers fault which has now been taken off. All im trying to state is that whenever there is an accident involving a motorcyclist everyone assumes that the motorcyclist was/is alwaysto blame. No, I wasnt there, but only voicing my opinion as many others have done on here. It was stated that motorcyclists are blind to indicators in the comment left before, hence why i said we are not. I and I'm sure a lot of others are fed up of having defend ourselves just because we ride a bike and its always assumed we are in the wrong. Again, the point in which i said drivers don't check they're mirrors before turning was proved by a goverment back campagn with the 'THINK BIKE'as a lot of accidents have been caused by drivers not looking in their mirrors or checking blind spots before pulling into another lane or turning-wasn't meant to be aimed at this paticular incedent. Was just defending motorcyclists because of the comment that was said before. I'm not only guessing as I have experienced it my self with drivers not looking and just pulling out infront of me to over take or out of junctions.

firstly my deepest sympathy to this poor man and his family ,left behind. If any one knows their geography of this road they will know that it is virtually impossible to see this right hand turn which is aturn off going north bound to the cattery and to join up with the road which turns right from the roundabout going towards the Dorchester Abingdon road.Cars should not be aloud to go right into this road as the cattery and Abingdon road can be reached safely by turning right at the roundabout.

I was so sorry to hear about Gary's untimely death. People do nee dto be more aware of bikers, my husband was forced off his bike on the same roundabout 2 yrs old by some idiot in a white van, other people witnessed this incident but noone got the number plate. my hubby was only doind about 45-50 that was proved by the police. People are always quick to blame the bikers, but sometimes it is just the inconsiderate idiots who drive vans, not that I am pointing any fingers I don't know the whole story. I am just speaking from proven past experience. My hubby sustained serious injuries to his arm and hip, he has never riden a bike since and swears he never will again.

Around 400yds south of the Golden Balls there is a spur road providing access to homes and linking into the B4015. I imagine that it will be part of the original A4074. Southbound traffic would turn right to access.

THANK U DARRYL i said that. the accident happened just after the dual carriage way as 2 lanes become 1. now are you able to turn right there accross the north bound carriage way to the slip road? there is no sign to say no right turn but no road markingas to say you can. in my own history of using that road over 20 years ive never seen or known any one to do a right turn there. Also the comment from sean in didcot u mention foxes diner why? is it cause its known for bikers?does it mean thats where he was going? no not at all.
Posted by: annon, Nr Berinsfield on 6:35pm Thu 7 Aug 08
In reply to Andrews comment as I said WHY turn right across the fast flowing traffic when it would be a lot safer to do so at the roundabout and access these homes etc from a minor road.A bike orCAR following the van would not realise the van was turning right as they could not see this small road to the right and may have thought he was signalling for a later turn. if cars are allowed to turn right here then it was an accident waiting to happen!

R.I.P Gary.
People who are leaving stupid messages plz have sum respect, this is not the time to be speculating & finger ponting.
I do not know gary & neither am i a biker, all i can say is that we all have to be careful and take responsibility when on the road regardless of whether its a bike, car, lorry etc. I don't know why bikers are always blamed whenever there's a accident involving a bike.
Plz think and pray for his family and leave the detective work to the police, no need to do their job for them nor come up with ur own conclusions. To his daughter & loved ones i'm so sorry for ur loss. He will be looking down from above and will always love and take care of you all, he's a shining star smiling down on you all.xx
