Attack dog is put down
The two-year-old Alsatian that attacked a teenager in a park has been put down despite calls to save its life.
Amy and Victor Armstrong decided to have their pet George put to sleep after it attacked 14-year-old Dominic Sanders, of Elm Drive, Garsington, on July 26.
He suffered two bite wounds after the dog was let off its lead by Mr Armstrong during one of its daily walks.
George was taken to a vet on Saturday despite some urging his owners to spare the dog's life.
Mr Armstrong said: "After everything that has happened, I'm just tired of it all now and want to move on."
Last week, his wife apologised for the incident. She added: "We're shocked at what he has done to the boy - we cannot apologise enough.
"What happened was definitely out of character. We're having him put down, which I'm a little bit choked about, but it should be done, because it's the law."
Many readers posting comments on our website www.oxfordmail.co.uk had called for George to be saved.

They were ritually killing a motorcycle the other day.
If you do not want the dog maybe someone else does?

This is a sad and preventable situation and the dogs life could have been saved it the owner used some common sense and leashed his dog in public.

Why do you try putting a leash on him and spare us your comments from the west coast of the U.S.

The owners were careless and irresponsible. Then they compound their error by having the dog killed. They should be prosecuted criminally. I imagine the victim's family will be filing a civil lawsuit as well.

In what respect do you think they should be prosecuted?

I'm very upset about this. My dog attacked me when I was younger but we gave him another chance, he's never done it again. He's part of the family, can't imagine being without him.
If it was up to me I wouldn't let the couple have any more pets in case the same thing happened again and they reacted the same way. What I would love to know is why wasn't the dog on a lead to start with?? This never would happened if he had been.

I am a little confused. A big powerful dog attacks a child. Dog is then put down (at owners request). I don't see the problem. Should the owners have waited until the attacks got more serious (loss of limbs, death of person/other dogs) until they have it put down?
Or maybe they should have given the dog away then someone else is responsible next time it attacks someone??

"A big powerful dog attacks a child."
(1) the dog did minimal damage,it was confused, most likely due to the teenagers teasing it.A dog like that ,if vicious, would have taken his arm off.....
(2) He is not a child,in fact he looks like a recruit from "Britains next ASBO".
"Dog is then put down (at owners request)"
(1) maybe easier to kill the dog than try to deal with the situation?
Or maybe they should have given the dog away then someone else is responsible next time it attacks someone??
(1)There is noting to lead you to say that it would have attacked again. This is utter nonsense.

Very sad. I would have given him a home with my other 2 year old German Shepherd.
A dog like that would do a great deal more damage if attacked, so this lad's scratch was clearly a warning to "leave me and my owner alone or else".
RIP George

You say you would have taken this dog in.. would your views still be the same, if this dog has killed the lad?????

I also find this a little hard to get my head around. We hear stories of dogs that attack people, but people are quite happy to let this dog have another chances because its the owners fault. In my opinion, the severity of an attack should not determine whether the dog should be put down or not. The simple fact is it lost control and attacked someone, and nobody can be completely sure that this will not happen again.
You only need to go on the BBC website to realise just how many people have been savaged by uncontrollable dogs. Instead of blaming the owners or teenagers, how about considering that this dog could have gone on to this to a small child in a more brutal way next time.
I like animals, but when you start placing their importance above the safety of toddlers and teenagers you have serious issues, or have obviously never experienced this happening to your own children.

The IS big and it IS powerful. That is fact.
The boy was 14. He is a child. That is fact.
You dont know if the child was teasing it. That is guessing.
There is nothing to say it WOULDN'T attack again. Again you are guessing.
The dog has a track record of attacking a child. That is fact. It poses a hightened risk having attacked already.
I don't think it is me who is talking nonsense. Just saying it how it is.
You are clearly an animal lover, which is admirable, but you need to concentrate on reality.

that dog could have and should have been saved!!
i believe he was provoked by that boy, and now the dog has been destroyed! im quite gutted, especially after people offered to take him. there wasnt a police order to have him put down, if it was my dog i would have stood my ground against that stupid mother that thinks the sun shines out of her kids backside!!
RIP little george xx

Sadly, as I expected, you are not able to have a constructive adult debate on the matter. You haven't replied to my post regarding the facts of the matter and have resorted to insults.
I suggest you don't bother posting until you are mature enough to debate a subject, rather than ranting and insulting.
