Description: Welcome! We hope this website gives you a good introduction to Magdalen College School. MCS was founded in 1480 by William Waynflete. Waynflete, believing in education as a facilitator of social mobility, wanted to found a school of an entirely new kind: a school that would be at the heart of that new and exciting proposition, the university. Quickly, MCS became one of the country's leading schools. Today's MCS, proud inheritor of these traditions, is still one of the country's leading schools. We believe that this is, in part, because of the continuing and remarkable relationship we enjoy with the global university which surrounds us. We are hugely fortunate in our facilities and environment. MCS is a friendly, inclusive and highly distinctive school of about 700 pupils, aged 7-18. No boy is lost in the crowd. We are small enough to develop every boy's character and talents, yet large enough to provide a very wide range of subjects and activities. We encourage a respect for learning whilst developing in each boy his aptitude for a remarkably broad number of extra curricular interests.
Activities: Boys are encouraged to be independent and responsible, and to take part in a wide range of activities. Rugby, cricket, hockey and tennis are traditionally very strong. Community Service is thriving, boys take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, and all three services flourish within the (voluntary) CCF. There is a strong tradition in music, sport, drama and chess. There are two large orchestras, senior and junior, a choral society (in addition to the choristers), a madrigal group, a jazz band and other ensembles.
Facilities: Magdalen College School is an independent school for boys and the Master is a member of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference. The school consists of some 702 boys, of whom 154 are in the Sixth Form. Boys enter the school at 7, 9, 11 and 13, with others joining in the Sixth Form. The school is heavily oversubscribed with three or four applicants for every place. There is a good balance of boys from local primary and independent preparatory schools. Although boys are admitted to the school without reference to their religious background, the school's moral teaching is rooted in the Christian ethic. Academic standards are extremely high. At A level 93% of grades were at A and B in 2007 (96% in 2006). Virtually all leavers proceed to degree courses at good universities, with just under a third of boys gaining Oxford and Cambridge offers in 2007. Fifth formers achieved a record 91% of GCSE passes at A* or A in 2007. In the last three years, only a handful of GCSE grades have been below a 'C'. We were chosen by The Sunday Times as their independent school of the year in November 2004.
Forthcoming Events: The annual Old Waynflete Dinner will take place on Saturday 21st March 2009. If you would like more information please contact the Development and Alumni Relations Office.
