Flames ripped through a scrapyard, gutting at least 20 cars used for banger racing.

Firefighters were called to the blaze at Priory Hall Farm, Boxted, early on Saturday morning.

The site is used to tune up and modify old cars for banger racing.

Station officer Glen Burton, of Colchester fire station's green watch, said: "The cars were stacked up and it was hard to get to them to tackle the flames.

"We didn't know what could be in there, as you never quite know what kind of fuels these racing guys are playing around with, but luckily there was nothing hazardous to deal with."
