A popular amateur footballer who died following a work accident is to be buried alongside his favourite uncle who lost his life in a house fire three years ago.

Steven Allen, 23, of Highfield Road in Keighley, died in hospital on Sunday after sustaining serious head injuries in a building site accident two days earlier.

Steven was working on creating a new waste-recycling centre in Bradford when the accident, believed to have involved lifting machinery, occurred last Friday afternoon.

Steven worked for Skipton-based building and engineering company JN Bentley, which he had joined as a 16-year-old apprentice.

Mrs Allen, 52, said: "Steven was just so loved and he was always up for getting people to do things. He was a bit of a motivator for other people. He was really popular.

"The hospital staff were absolutely brilliant."

The family decided to donate his organs and shortly after theatre they received the call to say Steven had died on Sunday morning. His heart has already saved the life of a 12-year-old girl.

Mrs Allen, who works at Focus DIY in Keighley, added: "He is going in the same grave as his uncle - they were best pals."

His uncle Stephen Allen died, aged 36, in a house fire at Long Lee three years ago. The inseparable pair were known as big Stephen and little Steven' to friends and family.

Steven, born in June 1983, was a pupil at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Primary School and Holy Family School in Keighley.

He has two brothers - Mark, 19, and Tom, 14 - and a sister, Kate, 15. His girlfriend of over two years, Helen Cook, was said by Mrs Allen to be lost' without him.

Steven, a part-time student at Keighley College, was a keen footballer for local teams Cavendish FC and Keighley Royal, who held a minute's silence for him on Sunday and have vowed to keep his shirt number off the pitch.

The funeral will take place at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church on March 23 at 11.30am.The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is carrying out an investigation.
