THE Lake District National Park Authority is set to back down over plans to charge boaters to sail, row and canoe on Lake District waters, after the public gave the money-making scheme the big thumbs down.
A three-month public consultation on plans to charge non-powered craft to sail the park's four navigable lakes sparked 2,000 responses and even a Downing Street petition.
While 83 per cent of those surveyed complained about extending the fees on Windermere, where powered craft are already charged, 91 per cent of lake users said they would not be willing to shell out money to sail on Coniston Water, Derwent Water and Ullswater.
LDNPA members are now being advised to reject the extended scheme when they meet on Wednesday (March 21) to review the lake services and discuss Windermere's controversial 10mph speed limit.
