Goalkeeper John Jones was one of seven players from The Ship FC who scored in their 7-4 victory at Sutton Benger which keeps them in second spot in the table.

Jones beat his opposite number with a wind assisted clearance and other goals from Nick Medin, Shaun Percival, Toby Dawson, with a sublime 25 yard volley, and Liam Milburn goal saw the Ship to a 5-1 half time lead with Chris Rawlings replying for Benger.

Dave Percival and Lee Hayward added further goals in the second half for the winners who were out scored by Benger, who netted through Chris Leonard (2) and Nick Slade.

The Horse and Groom played their penultimate game of the campaign at home to leaders British Lion OC at a windy Leighton Sports Ground and they slumped to a 9-1 loss as The Lion stroll to a 15th successive win of the season.

The Lion started brightly and within five minutes should have taken the lead. Andrew Webster met Nathan West's cross but his header lacked power and was comfortably saved by Nick Harrison.

But the lead came within a minute. Mark Stonestreet's long punt up field caught the Horse's defence flat and Tom Evans calmly lobbed the ball over Harrison and into an empty net. Evans doubled the lead within a minute in similar fashion. This time Webster was provider and Evans clipped his shot into the bottom left corner.

British Lion were totally dominating at this stage and Evans was denied a hat-trick on 12 minutes when Scott Brown's timely tackle stopped the young striker from close range. However, Evans completed his treble after 15 minutes with another striker's finish.

The charismatic John Stockman released Rob Drown and his cross allowed Evans to slide home from six yards. Centre half Dave Crawford was denied the Lion's fourth goal when his header from Mikey O'Donnell's corner was cleared off the line.

With a strong crosswind, the Horse and Groom found it hard to get forward in the first period but Duncan Biggin's foul on Ben Derrick in the 33rd minute gave them a rare opportunity. Alex Lutskes' 25 yard free kick was hit well but curled wide.

The British Lion made it 4-0 five minutes later with a superbly crafted goal. Drown's chip into the box was chested down by Stockman to allow West to tee up, juggle and then volley on the turn into the top corner from 20-yards.

Adam Bewley then fired a vicious 25-yard drive wide and West drilled in another 20 yard strike but this time straight at Harrison. Right on the break Horse full back Brown whistled a 35 yard shot from nowhere that made Stonestreet scuttle across his line before watching the ball drift wide.

The Horse and Groom came out of the stalls quickly in the second half and pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute.

Although a long clearance was back-headed by Lion's Crawford, the alert Derrick nipped in and crisply shot home to be the first player to score past Mark Stonestreet in over 500 minutes of football.

The goal motivated the Lion to step up a gear and six minutes later Drown skipped past Brown and thumped a shot against the near post. At the other end, another sweetly hit Lutskes corner was met by Derrick but his free header went over.

The Lion made it 5-1 and effectively killed off the contest on the hour.

Webster showed a deceptive turn of pace when he shrugged off John Fenwick's challenge and his cross was bundled home by Evans for his fourth goal. A mirror image move a minute later should have brought another Lion goal but this time Evans hit the side netting. Webster then set up Drown who clinically finished from 10 yards to make it 6-1.

With Evans and Webster now substituted, there was time for Luke Enderby and Danny Powell to continue where they had left off. In the 69th minute, Powell's deft through ball set Drown free and he fired past Harrison to make it 7-1.

The Horse and Groom nearly pulled a goal back with ten minutes left when yet another Lutskes' free kick was struck by Chris Fenwick but West bundled the ball off the line.

Enderby put the icing on the cake with two exquisite finishes in the last three minutes. First he curled home West's through ball from the edge of the box and then in injury time, after Powell and West had linked well, a little shimmy gave him space to crack a wicked shot past Harrison from an acute angle.

Rowde remain in third place after the landlords at Sands Lane defeated their tenants, The Crown Devizes, 5-2, and this was after Rowde had fallen two goals behind. Goals from Gary Wootton and Matt Nash, who was later sent off, put the Crown in charge, but it was not enough as Rowde stormed back to lead 3-2 at the interval, with goals from Rob Mitchell, Marcus Wallen (penalty) and Jamie Mullens.

Second half goals from Mullens and Wallen, who wrapped things up right at the end, made the scoring look more respectable but the margin of Rowde's win should have been more convincing as they missed a host of other chances.

Biddestone Arms had the better of the chance against Southwick Sports, but with neither team being able to find the killer touch the game at Cuttle Lane ended goal-less.

Last Sunday saw AFC Calne throw away a two goal lead before losing 3-2 against the Ship FC; this weekend they had to overturn a two goal arrears before triumphing over FC Bradford by 4-3.

Morgan Williams and Jason Harford (penalty) saw Bradford lead at the interval. Shaun Ward clawed a goal back for Calne and when Richard Sheffield drew them level it looked as if the game would end all square. That was until Simon Dance put Calne in front. Lee Radwell squared things up for Bradford and once again the points looked as if they would be shared, but with time running out Calne's Simon Vowden struck what proved to the winning goal.
