ORIENTEERING: Upwards of 300 competitors enjoyed excellent conditions and spring sunshine for the third round of the Cumbria Galoppen League organised by Warrior OC.

The longer technical courses started above High Close, making good use of the complex terrain on Silver How before dropping down through the woods towards White Moss Common. Shorter, less technical, courses were based around the paths and tracks linking with Loughrigg Terrace.

Brendan Bolland (Warrior OC) won on the brown course with regular top points scorers Mike Billinghurst and Ken Noblett (West Cumberland OC) both disqualified for punching wrong controls.

Martin Bagness was second, while Lakeland's Jon Lagoe was pipped for third by Andy Lewsley (Borderliners OC) by just 12 seconds.

Lakeland junior Michael McIver won on blue while another junior, 14-year-old Charlotte Watson, from West Cumberland, was an excellent second in her first run on the green, sandwiched between Lakeland seniors Graham Farley and Dave Nield.

Lakeland juniors Max O'Hara and Jenny Rhodes were first and second on the yellow, where the club filled nine of the first 12 places. Lakeland had to settle for second place through Andrew Benson on orange, with West Cumberland members John Cooper and Gwen Rae first and third respectively. On light green, veteran Stan Johnson secured good points for Lakeland in second with Steph Clayton third. Jessica Bibby (West Cumberland) was a convincing winner, nearly nine minutes ahead.
