RESIDENTS were shocked when ten mature trees were chopped down and shredded on a building site.
The trees were chopped down to make way for the new Cockerton Primary School building, next to the existing building.
But one resident of nearby Eggleston View said she was "amazed" when they were taken down last week.
The woman, who did not wish to be named, said: "They were up one minute, and then gone the next. I don't think it's right they can just chop down mature trees like that."
Another resident said: "It's a real shame to see them chopped and shredded."
The £3m school is being funded by the Durham Diocese board of education. The old building, built in 1925, will be demolished when the new one is complete.
A Darlington Borough Council spokesman said: "Removing the trees was part of the planning application which was approved last year."
