VOLUNTEER police cadets were rewarded for their efforts at a special ceremony where an Astley teenager topped the awards.

Certificates were presented to 21 16 to 19-year-olds at the Wigan Police Cadet of the Year Awards and 19-year-old Ben Donagain was named Wigan Police Cadet of the Year.

Cadets successfully achieved Key Skill Awards in a 38-week course run by officers from the Wigan division.

They were tested on first-aid, physical fitness and the history of policing.

They also gained practical experience working alongside officers in the community.

Top cadet Ben Donagain was commended for his academic achievement and enthusiasm throughout the course.

Superintendent Shaun Currie said: "This has been a great opportunity for young people to get a real insight into the variety of work undertaken by the police.

"They have been a fantastic group who worked hard and deserve the success. We are very proud of them."

Youth development officer PC Chris Kelly, who organised the evening, said: "The cadets are a real inspiration to others and give us hope for the future.

"They prove anyone can do something positive, if given the right opportunity. They are a credit to themselves, their parents and GMP."
