Sometimes, when snow fails to settle on the coast, it can be lying heavily in the hilly suburbs.
Woodingdean, being one of the highest and most exposed, tends to collect more snow than most.
This picture, taken in the Thirties, shows snow clearance at the crossroads where Falmer Road meets Warren Road by the Downs Hotel.
Even allowing for the fact snow has been pushed to the edges of the road, this must have been a heavy fall.
Today the sheer weight of traffic along main roads and modern gritting keeps the roads open most of the time, although Falmer Road over towards Lewes Road is still prone to drifting.
