CHIPPING Norton Lido has been given a £3,374 grant by West Oxfordshire District Council.

The outdoor pool will use the money to help pay for a £9,640 project to rebuild its chlorination plant.

The council's cabinet supported a bid from Chipping Norton Lido Ltd, the charity which manages the pool, after hearing the work was necessary for health and safety reasons.

Cllr Tony Walker, cabinet member for leisure and tourism, said: "The charity has done extremely well in managing the pool and organising fundraising to keep it running and we are very pleased to be able to contribute towards this vital project."

Graeme Williamson, director of the Lido, said work on the plant would be carried out during the winter, in time for the 2007 summer season. The charity is using fundraising money to pay for the rest of the project.

More than 17,000 swimmers used the pool, in Fox Close, during 2006. It is now closed for the winter and will re-open in March or April.
