CREWE will intensify their search of the lower leagues and beyond to unearth another gem in the mould of Danny Woodards.

The 23-year-old right-back has impressed since joining the Alex in what looks a £30,000 steal from Conference outfit Exeter City during the January transfer window.

And after also plucking Luke Varney from non-league Quorn a few years ago, Woodards' arrival has confirmed that the talent is still out there to be found.

Looking to strengthen the squad for next season, boss Dario Gradi hopes to beat the bigger clubs to their signatures.

"I still think we've a chance of doing business with clubs in League Two," he said.

"We were approached by the agent of a player in this league about a loan move with a view to it being permanent.

"We said we'd do it and then we didn't hear anything.

"We just get used by some agents who will then say Crewe are interested.

"When we deal with the non-league boys, it's either done quickly or not at all.

"What we're looking for is the Danny Woodards of this world.

"We're on the phone and we're out looking.

"Steve (Holland) is out now on Saturdays and if we get really safe, either Neil (Baker) or I will go if we're interested.

"We have to supplement our own kids."

Crewe have farmed out their own prospects on loan to non-league clubs to further their progress.

Under-18 leading scorer Nicky Farquharson has moved to Witton Albion, joining Adam Warlow who has already hit 26 goals there.

Winger Gareth Evans and striker Omari Morgan-Smith have gone to Alsager Town while Bryon Moore is currently grabbing the goals at Kidsgrove.

"People have gone out on loan and done well," added Gradi.

"Rob Hulse went to Hyde and I know he still retains a great affection for the people there.

"It's good that he feels like that.

"Adam Warlow has been the subject of much conversation.

"He's had a lot of time off with injury, a year or so.

"He's a quiet boy but the physios say he's getting stronger and fitter all the time and if he improves physically, he could mentally."
