I WISH to comment on the story Borough Disappears in Logo Redesign'.

As Leader of the Liberal Democrats I believe the Tories have taken a costly, retrograde step on this issue. The new logo detracts from the real meaning that Trafford is a metropolitan borough council. In 1973 the shadow council was formed for this borough and the charter year was 1974. In those early days Trafford residents remained very parochial, not wishing to give up their previous status of Altrincham, Sale, Stretford and Urmston boroughs etc. The new borough of Trafford was not easily accepted by residents at first. However time has healed the wounds and most residents, some reluctantly, have given their stamp of approval to the Trafford M.B.C.

A borough now respected country wide as a success in local government re-organisation, which we honour with pride.

Now in one fell swoop by the Tories, our heritage and identity changes and they destroy all the bonding and hard work that has taken place during the past 34 years.

To me the metropolitan borough' aspect is an important part of our image and has been worked for, it is also more than simply Trafford, we need to retain the distinguishing identity away from Trafford Park, Old Trafford. Trafford taxis etc., and be in line with other metropolitan authorities.

Also make no mistake, this Tory exercise will be expensive and will be well in excess of the £3,750 setting up cost by Unique Creative Communications. The Liberal Democrat group was not consulted on this matter of the rebrand' as part of the council corporate image, otherwise we would have opposed it.

We also believe that the Trafford motto HOLD FAST THAT WHICH IS GOOD' should remain, and in this case be acted upon.

Councillor Ray Bowker, Leader of the Liberal Democrat group.
