When the SCO found itself needing a new conductor for a big all-Mozart programme after Sir Charles Mackerras pulled out for personal reasons towards the end of last year, Louis Langree must have seemed an ideal candidate.
The French conductor might not be a big-name audience draw in Scotland like Mackerras, but as music director of the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York for the past four years, his pedigree for tackling a programme consisting of the composer's last three symphonies is unquestionable.
The one-time music director of Glyndebourne Touring Opera, who has also conducted at Covent Garden, has a forthcoming debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York with, what else? Don Giovanni.
