Dean Wilkins today hailed the Ronaldo-style toe-poke which helped Albion complete a quick-fire hat-trick of League One wins.

Bas Savage won possession and fired a remarkable 18th-minute clincher against his former club to give the Seagulls a third victory in just eight days.

Savage's goal silenced the home fans, sent the travelling hoards into raptures and brought a smile to the face of his manager.

Wilkins said "The last time I saw somebody toe-poke the ball in like that was possibly Ronaldo in the World Cup, I think against Japan.

"He defended high up the pitch, he got one of those long legs of his to the ball and he took it off their defender."

Savage was given a torrid welcome back to the Priestfield by Gillingham fans but Wilkins said: "Bas is quite chilled. I don't think it was much different for him coming back and playing against his old club."

Victory takes Albion nine points clear of the bottom four and keeps them in high spirits ahead of visit from another of Savage's old clubs, Bristol City.

But they were holding on at the end last night as debut 'keeper Scott Flinders saw a Michael Flynn header hit the post.

Wilkins added: " I think we probably got to every ball first and managed to get it clear. In those terms I have to be very pleased because territorially they absolutely murdered us."

Joel Lynch came off in the second half with a knee problem and Albion will check his fitness today.
