A bogus water board official stole money from the home of an 83-year-old woman.

The man knocked on the front door of the house on Edward Street at 9am last Wednesday and told the victim that he needed to check the water.

The offender went into the kitchen, turned on the cold tap, and asked the woman to sit there. He then went into the living room and stole cash before leaving by the back door.

Anybody who saw anybody acting suspiciously in the area or who has any information about this incident is asked to contact police in Leigh on 0161 856 2234 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

PC Michelle Deacle from Leigh police station said: "Whilst I want to warn people that they must be vigilant and take no chances when opening their doors to strangers, I also want to reassure them that we take reports of this kind extremely seriously.

"We are determined to help older people live safe, happy and independent lives in their own homes, and will deal severely with anyone assuming a bogus identity to defraud innocent members of the public.

"I would encourage people to take part in the Homewatch scheme, and to alert the police to any suspicious callers you might have, even if nothing is stolen, as the information you can give us may be the key to catching these devious people.

"I cannot emphasise enough that you do not have to let anyone into your house if you don't feel comfortable doing so. Genuine callers would never wish to cause you distress, and would be happy to call again at another time when someone else was present.

"They will always carry identification and will be happy to show it to you on request. If they don't, don't let them in."
