A FARMER has welcomed the possibility of a farmers' market but has warned it could be one market too far.

Bob Uglow, of Chinnor Road, Bledlow, spoke after Monday's meeting of Princes Risborough Town Centre Forum heard how a farmers' market could be set up in Princes Risborough.

He said a small market could be good for local farmers suffering after the foot and mouth virus.

He said: "I am sure there are some farmers about that would want to have a market to sell produce."

But Mr Uglow warned about the number of farmers' markets running.

He said: "There's Aylesbury, Thame, Wallingford and Marlow. There could be a problem of overcooking the goose by having one too many farmers' markets."

At the forum, members heard Geoff Rosby, chairman of the Thames Valley Farmers Market Association, give a talk on how a farmers' market would benefit the area.

He said: "I expect this to be a thriving site for a farmers' market. Local producers would find a place like Princes Risborough very attractive."

Mr Rosby added that a small farmers' market would attract the smaller producers and would benefit from being on the same day.

But a proposed location for the market, round Market House, is currently used by the thriving Women's Institute stalls.

Lance Adlam, chairman of the forum, who was instrumental in reviving the charter market, said: "There are a number of problems we have to face."

He explained that it would be difficult to host a farmers' market on the same day as the charter market because of the stalls already there. And there is only one day on which Princes Risborough is licensed to hold a market.

The town centre forum decided to look further into the idea, with Wycombe District Council officer Chris Waterton to investigate the possibility of hosting one on a Friday from March.
