WASPS Director of Rugby Ian McGeechan said Saturday's win at Kingsholm was a perfect response to critics doubting the desire at the club.

He said: "A few people had questioned the commitment and desire at the club.

"I think we've shown today that it's no less. It matters so much and I think it's a privilege to be part of it. They work really hard to maintain such a high standard."

He also admitted the experience in his side swung the balance.

McGeechan said: "One thing experience gives you is, if you've been there before, you know how to win.

"We've not been too hot in our last 20 minutes since the cup final. Up to that point we'd been really consistent in how we were playing in the latter stages, but that has let us down over the last few weeks.

"But we told ourselves not to panic, to play in the right areas of the field and hang on to the ball.

"I think we were always going to score. The challenge was scoring enough. There was a huge amount of composure there."

And that despite going behind early on, then conceding three tries in less than 20 minutes in the second half as Gloucester attacked from every area of the park.

McGeechan said: "They took some handling. We'd spoken about how open their game was and we expected it because you don't keep the youngsters in and then tell them to play differently.

"We were aware of what they were trying to do and the challenge for us was to try and match it. But we knew if we turned it over they were likely to score from their own try line."

But Wasps held firm and that resilience was encouraging.

McGeechan said: "That wasn't just a Premiership game. That was a pressure game and when you have players that respond to that it augers well."
