A TELEVISION film studio is to be built on the former Kwik Save site in Frogmore, Park Street, creating 250 new jobs in the district, it was announced on Wednesday.

However, the move was slammed by campaigners from action group Lorries Out Of Park Street (Loops), who claim it will add to the growing problem of congestion and noise pollution from lorries in the village.

Calling for the construction of a bypass to ease heavy vehicle traffic in Park Street, Loops organiser Mrs Karen Du Gard said: "They say there will be 250 jobs created, but there are only 205 car park spaces on the site, so where is everyone going to go? This will mean over 400 lorry movements a day it's a nightmare here now with heavy lorries thundering past constantly."

In the meantime, the group is lobbying St Albans District Council for lorries to be re-directed via the A414 and for pollution study there.

Residents are also being asked to sign a petition calling for immediate action from the council.

Planning permission was granted to developers Global Land Ltd two weeks ago, allowing the construction of a filming centre and ancillary offices but subject to restrictions, including curfews and limits on heavy goods vehicle movement.

A planning report stated the new development would mean "a 95 per cent reduction in the number of large heavy goods vehicle movements compared to the previous Kwik Save use".
