TRADING standards chiefs are warning of the dangers of bogus workmen after a Harlow woman was charged £250 for guttering repairs.

Officers have received complaints from residents in west Essex about poor quality work carried out by workmen who give the impression they are from a legitimate firm but give out false contact details.

The recent heavy rain revealed that the workmen had failed to reconnect the woman's replacement guttering.

The telephone number she had been given was unobtainable and her letter to the business was returned as addressee unknown.

Householders are being advised not to make an immediate decision if workmen call unexpectedly.

They say genuine companies are happy to wait for a decision and it is a good idea to check out any references or contact details before agreeing to any work.

County councillor David Westcott, cabinet member for environmental management and trading standards, said: "Not all doorstep callers are genuine.

"Don't be tricked by their stories. Home improvements can be a big decision. Take your time to think about them or to talk it over with a friend."
