A PAGAN folk band from Weymouth has been rewarded for writing a wonderful theme tune.

The Dolmen beat off competition from around the globe to have their song selected as the official theme tune for the New Seven Wonders of the World competition.

The contest for the official Seven Wonders of the World has attracted about 30 million voters worldwide and the band has been invited to perform at the official declaration ceremony.

Lead singer Tony Jameson said: "I'm really elated at the fact that we have done it.

"They had quite a few people from other countries who have written music for it but fortunately we managed to get straight through unanimously.

"They only had it for about a week and put it straight in for their anthem.

"It's only just dawned on me over the last couple of days that 30 million people who have voted get an email telling them the official Seven Wonders song has been released."

The idea for writing the official song came about when the band met organisers as part of their involvement in promoting Stonehenge for the competition.

The band's manager Chris Walsh said: "When the competition was whittled down to 21 sites we went off to Stonehenge during the filming and went on television. We got talking to the people running it and when they got back the band wrote a song. We sent it off to them and they loved it."

The song is called New Seven Wonders and Mr Jameson hopes that the band's involvement will raise the profile of the competition in this country.

He said: "The main thing is there are lots of people who are pushing their monument and really going for it. But in this country there is very little happening.

"Stonehenge has only got until July 7 and then it's all finished, it's not going to be re-voted for another couple of thousand years."

He added that the recognition given to the song, which was produced at Mike Hallet's studio in Weymouth, defies the image of how this area is seen by the music industry.

"Nothing ever happens down this end of the world musically, we are considered a bunch of carrot crunchers.

"The fact is this song will get relayed around the world and to get through everything so quickly is a major achievement."

New Seven Wonders Head of Value Development Jean-Paul de la Fuente said: "We are very excited. At Stone Henge they said they were interested and when we heard it we though it was brilliant.

"We have offices around Europe and everbody seems to be singing it already. Anyone who is interested in good music will be interested in it."
