Four pupils from year nine are strumming their way to success in a Welsh version of battle of the bands.

Sam Freeman, Alex Picton, Tom Turner and Lawrence Stalbow-Best, all pupils at Milford Haven Comprehensive, are better known as Hybridz.

The boys, entered the competition organised by the Welsh Language Initiative in Pembrokeshire to find the best Welsh language school band.

The 13 and 14-year-olds, are all learning Welsh as a second language at school and with help from head of Welsh, Mr Knox, decided to enter the competition.

The Hybridz, took part in several rock workshops in preparation for the competition and dedicated hours of their spare time to create three original songs and to practise their performance.

Mr Knox said: "I am so proud of the boys, they have worked so hard and have really embraced the whole experience."

The teenagers won their first round competition held in Crymych in February, and then went on to compete in the second round in Carmarthen last week.

Hybridz was one of three bands on the night to get through to the semi-final round.

They will now, along with another 11 semi-finalists from across Wales, get the opportunity to hear one of their songs played on Radio Cymru this week.

Four songs will be aired each night on the radio station's 9.30pm show C2 and Hyrbridz will listen to their song on Friday night's show.

Lead guitarist of the band, Tom Turner, said: " We have had a fantastic time and we have all really enjoyed it.

"It will be great to hear our song on the radio and if we did go further in the competition that would be great, but whatever happens we have all had an amazing time."

A voting phone line will open on Friday evening from 10 pm where listeners are asked to phone in and text their favourite from the 12 songs.

The top six from the phone and text vote will go on to compete in the final.

If you would like to offer the group your support you can call 08703 500500 from 10pm on Friday evening and vote for Hybridz.

As part of the final prize the winning band will get to play at this year's Eisteddfodd and also record one of their songs in a recording studio.
