A £10 million state-of-the-art health centre is to be built in Bingley.

Health chiefs gave the thumbs up for the new facility, set to be built on the corner of Kingsway and Ferncliffe Road by 2009.

The move comes in a bid to modernise services in the town and will result in the closure of Bingley Hospital, Bingley Health Centre, Bridge House and three GP practices.

All closed services will be transferred to the new centre.

Bradford and Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust's (tPCT) board of directors also gave the green light to the possibility of providing outreach services in Cross Flatts, Eldwick and Gilstead.

The move will be welcomed by residents after a consultation took place in December last year. Just under 400 people supported this option, while just 29 favoured maintaining the status quo. 26 opted for a new build at Bingley Hospital, a further 30 responses indicated no view at all and 14 suggested alternatives or a combination of the three options.

Dr John Givans, secretary of Bradford and Airedale Local Medical Committee, said: "The GPs have been struggling to get this for years. It's a good move. They need much more room to develop the additional services they are going to provide."

The tPCT's director of service development, Helen Hirst, said there had been "unprecedented" levels of support for the new centre.

An outline proposal for creating outreach services will be put before members within two months.

Also at today's meeting, plans to close a surgery in Windhill were unanimously agreed by health chiefs.

Prospect Walk Branch Surgery will close its doors in June and services will be transferred to Frizinghall.

Members agreed in principle to fund transport for vulnerable and elderly patients to access Frizinghall. Councillor Tony Miller said: "It's a sad day. This will have a detrimental effect on a number of vulnerable people."

Members also agreed the closure of Paternoster Lane surgery in Great Horton. Services will be transferred to Horton Bank Surgery.
