Glassboys 1 Yeltz1 Glassboys won 4-3 on penalties

The Glassboys took the borough bragging rights after beating rivals Halesowen on penalties thanks to three saves from Lewis Solly in the semi-final of the Worcestershire Senior Cup.

The semi-final pitted the two teams together in a competitive match for the first time in 11 years at a bitterly cold War Memorial Ground, on Tuesday evening.

Stourbridge started the game in bright fashion and took a deserved lead after only two minutes.

Leon Broadhurst found himself in the right place at the right time to slot home a low effort after the Yeltz defenders were unable to clear a cross from the right.

Stourbridge nearly made it two from the kick off after yet more confusion amongst the Halesowen backline.

A weak header by Gary Knight to keeper Chris Jay was picked up by the live wire Sam Rock who depsite knocking the ball past the keeper was unable to find the empty net.

Despite their comical start to proceedings, Halesowen finally started to get into the game with the experienced Lee Williams and Paul Devlin pulling the strings.

Their pressure nearly paid off after 20 minutes but frontman Junior Brown blazed over from eight yards.

The visitors however got their deserved equaliser just after the half hour mark when fine play by Devlin on the right led to Jason Powell picking the ball up 25 yards out and after having a quick look up exquistly chipped Glassboys keeper Lewis Solly.

Just like the first half Stourbridge came out the stronger in the second periodand nearly took the lead after 53 minutes when Andy Wells shot wide and shortly afterwards a cross from Jamie Rogers was tipped over by the Yeltz in-form keeper.

The visitors best chance to win the game came after 87 minutes when substitute Aaron Farrell's turn and shot fell invitingly into the arms of Solly.

However it was Stourbridge who should have secured victory late on when Jay saved Gary Knight's blushes after a back header fell into the path Mark Bellingham who was only able to blast the ball into his chest.

The young Halesowen keeper was also the star of extra time by pulling off two brilliant saves firstly from a close range Ryan Mahon effort and then a long range shot from substitute James Dyson.

With neither side being unable to break the dealock it was time for penalties and the Glassboys keeper to steal the show.

After already saving spot kicks from Graham Hyde and Rob Warner, Solly pulled off a fine save from Farrell to secure victory and a place in the final where Evesham await.
